The purpose of this note is to provide step-by-step guidance for key actors interested in integrating the Self Help Group (SHG) approach across their programming. It serves as a roadmap for practitioners seeking to leverage the SHG model for holistic community-led development, and outlines core concepts, methodologies, and best practices. The guidance offers flexibility and can be tailored to different contexts and needs, ensuring it remains relevant across varied settings. It is accompanied by a standalone “Compendium of tools,” which offer further depth on key activities contained in this Guidance Note and a standalone “Annex of Templates.” SHG members themselves are the ultimate driver of this approach. In keeping with the principles of autonomy and self-leadership championed by the SHG approach, this guidance focuses on the creation of a supportive environment where SHG members lead the formation of their group; ensuring that key processes are driven by their collective insights, experiences, and priorities.
